This weekend Pumpernickel&Rye Editor, Christopher Mohs, ventured to his Upper West Side, New York Farmer’s Market to give you a peek at some of the more interesting produce available this time of year. We hope you take a chance on a few of these, and please do share your recipes in the comments.
Golden Romano Beans have a bit of a snap to it and makes a great alternative to the usual green be a found in the supermarket.
Sugar plums are a delicious option for tarts, jams, and well anything you'd typically use plums for. With it's slightly intensified flavor, you'll absolutely love this fruit at the Farmers Market stand.
Similar to the Sugar Plum highlighted here, the Yellow Plum is smaller than what you would typically find in the supermarket with a slightly intensified flavor. A great alternative for a unique plum recipe.
Heirloom tomatoes are all the rage right now. They are considered heirloom because they are from seed varieties that originate from 1951 or earlier. Typically these varieties hold a more intense tomato flavor and quiet often have more of the nutrients than the supermarket cousin.
When we found Baby Cucumbers we just had to ask about its origins. This is an ultra mini variety from Mexico and is great for making pickles with. With their bite size appeal, they will make the ideal gherkin this canning season.
With baby greens being all the rage right now you must try Pea Greens as part of the craze. These newly sprouted greens have a fresh, sweet flavor ideal for kids and nutritionally challenged adults. They are a good source of Potassium, Vitamin C and fiber. Best eaten raw.

Rainbow Swiss Chard makes for an alternative to the Kale craze, you should check out the varieties of Swiss Chard. Very similar in taste and texture, you'll like this dark leafy green packed with nutrients and fiber. Just steer clear of the stems as they are very fibrous and largely inedible.
Sure you can find eggplant in the supermarket, but can you find all the different varieties? They all taste largely the same, but the variation in color will add a fresh level of vibrancy to your dishes.
Haircut Yaun Yellow Bean is a baby yellow wax bean that is juicy and tender and great raw or cooked. It makes a great alternative to the usual green bean found in the supermarket.
Zucchini comes in vibrant yellows and greens at the Farmers Market. The taste is much the same, but you'll notice a distinct difference in the quality of this produce in the Farmers Market. With this great vegetable it's time to whip up some amazing zucchini dishes.
